Dr. Powell is being hailed as the most performed and published African-American woman composer of choral music internationally. Her compositional vocabulary is distinct, rich and varied. Words commonly used to describe Dr. Powell’s music are “vibrant, energetic, rhythmic, passionate, heart-warming, lyrical and singable.”  Dr. Powell composes for numerous distinguished publishers including the Oxford University Press (London, the Hal Leonard Corporation, Gentry Publications, and Alliance Music Publications. She is commissioned yearly to compose for professional and community choruses, church choirs, university choruses and secondary school choirs throughout the U.S. and Europe. Her work has been auctioned by Chorus America and her compositions are in great demand at choral festivals around the world, frequently appearing on the regional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, as well as Honor Choir festivals. They are popular in many parts of the world including Asia, Europe, Africa, and South and Central America.
